Negative StrHate Edge hardcore from Paris – xDIGx (FR).


Thanx a lot for the interview!

Please introduce yourself and the band xDIGx for the people who don`t know you. When did you start the band, who are the members and so on.

Hi! We started rehearsing around the end of 2009 if I remember right. We have had the same line up since the beginning, except the original guitarist who has gone to live in Essen, and has been replaced like a year ago, by Vincent. Axel we still love you bro, hope you'll come back to Paris some day!
So we were supposed to sound more like old nyhc stuff in the beginning, like OUZBURST, very old MADBALL and shit, but we found our way in the style we have had since our demo, which is a bit more metallic I guess. Can't hate SLAYER!


How long have you all known each other? How did you meet?

Man I think we are the best of friends, this is what this band is mainly based on (that, and
being angry dickheads). There are a few of us that I can't imagine being in a band with people they're not friends with, the shit would get out of control so quick... It already happened in the past haha! We've known each other for quite a while, except for our kid Vincent who was still playing with his poo when we were going to our first shows. But he is like our little bro now.


Are any members in side projects beyond xDIGx?

xDIGx was supposed to be a side project... So Daick our bass player is always in 4 or 5 bands (check www.myspace.com/mowol for some hardcore punk for example). Our drummer Ben sings in BLACK SPIRALS (check them out there : http://blackspirals.bandcamp.com/) who have already played a few times in Germany, and Vincent has a skatepunk project that seems to be on its way. Our guitar player Nico has played in every Paris Straight Edge band.
Nico, Ben and I, Erwan, also have a side project with some friends, "Boston 2000" style, we should see that quickly enough after xD.I.G.x's EP is recorded.


Who came up with the name xDIGx and what`s the idea behind this name?

I am guilty for that name. I have always wanted to have a band that would be called D.I.G.. You can put so many different meanings behind these letters, which is good. But all I can say is that at the start these letters represent our respect to Floorpunch's interviews and spirit.


And which bands influenced you most?

To be quick, I should name three cities instead of a bigger list of bands whose influence can be found in xDIGx : some Boston, Cleveland, and New York bands. Oh shit there’s California too.


On your MySpace we found following part:
"Ils ont beau se foutre de ma gueule, c'est métal à fond, lourd, à base d'aller retour à la guitare, triolet et compagnie. En plus ils sont méchant, ils on faillit cassé la gueule à Stéphane."
What does it mean and could you translate these words please?

Haha, it's what a friend of us said after attending our first show. I thought it described us well : "They can keep mocking at me, but they are metal all the way, heavy, back and forth guitar riffs and shit. Plus they are mean, they almost broke Stephane's face."


xDIGx are celebrating obviously the trademark “Nike”. Why?

Hm not all the trademark man. I, for one, am really angry for the way they screwed up most of the retro Air Stab and retro Pegasus '89 releases, and a few others... Thank God the AM1 shape has come back to quality lately, I like it almost as much as the original shape.
But our skinhead likes his Adidas way more than Nike.
And our lumberjack only wears Vans.
The rest of the band is cool though.


And what is your favourite Nike stuff?

Air Max 1 all the way for me. And some Liquid Racer. But some AM 90, 95 and 97 and Structure are also very acceptable !


In 2010 you guys released the “Notorious Demo”, which includes 5 tracks . The Cover shows a close-up picture of the American rapper. Are you such great fans of Notorious B.I.G.?

I don't think we can exactly be referred to as great fans of his, but we like his sound in general. We thought the rip off was cool. And we did not have many other ideas for the demo cover. haha



Against whom is the track “Less Vans More Air Max”?

Against all those so called rebels who dress all the same and try to act the most politically correct they can, and try with their group of friends who are just like them to exclude you if you do one thing that is not PC in front of them. The title is just an image of course, we also happen to wear Vans. But it is kind of efficient since people remember us thanks to this name, which, I have to admit, is pretty shocking.


And in the track “Life Hater” we found the line
“No PMA for me
I'd rather hate today
No PMA for me
I'd rather hate all days.”
What does “PMA” stand for?

I know it may seem stupid but it really is BAD BRAINs' Positive Mental Attitude. Damn this shit is not for me. Never been. I don't think it ever will be. I am not gonna talk shit about the BAD BRAINs though because it was not my point at all when I wrote these lyrics.


The other tracks are full of hate, rage and dissatisfaction, too (“What a boring life,
Hating everyday”, “Because this world is crap” and so on). Where does this negative attitude come from?

From everyday life, working, staying more or less poor, feeling enslaved to a life we haven't really chosen. Not having had the same chances others have had. And for hanging out with the other guys in the band, I can tell it's what they all feel at times, some maybe more than others. Anger is growing on us and we need a way to externalize it or else it might eat us alive. So yes, this band is a catharsis for everything we can’t stand. But don’t be afraid, most of the time we are pretty chill dudes!


Do you think there are a lot of reasons to be so happy in this world?

At times we feel surrounded by assholes, a lot of people piss us off each day, bosses and shit.
I guess being happy is a state of mind, some people are happy with just not much. I can't. I can't feel satisfied when I live what I live, see what I see and know what I know. Even if I am far from being the most miserable person in the world. And about boss problems, I really have issues with authority in general, and these days in particular. It sure will get me in serious troubles some day soon.


Is the “Notorious Demo” your first release or are there other ones?

Yes it is, recorded in may 2010 by Jerome Turblin, and we are currently recording the new 7" with him again. We have recorded the drums already so it’s all on its way now, and we know he will do a very good job with what we will give in studio. This next disc will be an E.P., called “Socially Disabled”. It should sound probably more serious and a bit less stupid lyric wise, and the same goes for the music. At least that’s what we are trying to do. I still have to write the lyrics for the last song by this time haha.


“Say yes to Drug Free“ - Why are you guys straight edge? Which reasons made you sure to live this lifestyle?

Because that is just the way we are. I used to smoke pot and drink without liking it when i was a teenager. But that was mostly to act like the others, I guess I didn't want to be rejected again. And then I thought about it, and decided to go my own way, and fuck those who wouldn't like it. Cliché as it is. Fuck peer pressure.


And do you live a vegetarian life style, too?

We have one vegetarian in the band. But his english sucks even more than mine so you won't hear what he has to say !


We think that not everyone in your fanbase is sXe. Are you a militant die-hard str8 edge band or is it ok to smoke/drink/whatever in front of you? How do you handle with non-straight-edge dudes?

We love non straight edge dudes as much as the others but not the same way. It's so funny to see drunk people doing shit when you are sober. I do think we need them to have good times haha. We would be so friendless if we only talked to straight edge people. France is really not the best country to be an intolerant straight edge guy. Even if some times it gets really appealing !


What are your favorite sXe-bands?

Tough question! From YOUTH OF TODAY and CHAIN OF STRENGTH to HARM`S WAY and AGITATOR...
My personal favorites are the youth crew ‘97-‘03 era bands though.


Did you ever play in Germany? Or are there any plans to play here?

We haven't played there yet, but we will be a part of the Break Down The Walls Fest with awesome bands, don't miss it, 30th April in Essen. The German scene is great, we are thinking about making 3 shows there in June, booking will start soon (xdigxparisx@gmail.com).


Do you know some german HC-bands?

Of we course we do! EYEBALL was so fucking awesome... TRUE BLUE too. We also listen to THE ICE and AYS for example. Europe in general has some crazy bands.


Do you know how many shows you played yet and with which bands you shared the stage already?

We haven't played a lot because we don't want to play too much in the same areas.
We have shared the stage with THE MONGOLOIDS, BACKTRACK, DOWNPRESSER but this doesn't really matter, does it? I think we have played less than 10 shows, and could have played twice as much. Call us lazy.


And what are the next chances to see xDIGx live?

Already answered :)


Are there some bands out of Paris we have to check out?

Only a few now. But the situation should improve soon, some people are working on that.


And is there a large and cool scene in your area?

If you like beatdown metal bands yes, if not take your car and go to Nantes or some places like this. I for one don't feel that much connected to gangsta or springbreak video clips, signing sessions, promo pics and long epic self-loving biographies. So that doesn't leave many bands for me to relate here. The next big thing I see coming is the new youth crew style band called No Solution from Nantes. We saw them play recently and it really has what it takes to be well known outside the country and finally put France on the map. Can’t wait for their demo.


If we would end up in Paris – which places do we have to check out?

Ah that needs a long answer! Depends if you want to see sights, go to shows, skate, fight… Get in touch with us when you are coming and we’ll try and help you out!

SAVE MY SOUL Records Interview

SAVE MY SOUL (GER) Records is a new, upcoming DIY hardcore label out of Germany.


We did the following interview with Fabian - one of the two founders. Thanx for your time!!

Please describe SAVE MY SOUL Records in a few sentences. Who is in the label, when did you start your business and so on.

SMS is basically me and Christoph. Also, we now have Angela and Jan helping out with layout stuff and Sven is starting to help us out with the zine. We started this thing around April/May 2010 with our zine and, shortly after, the SOUL SEARCH demo.


What inspired you to start your own record label?

I have been writing for Ox Fanzine since 2001 and somehow just felt like I needed to do something more. Since I don’t have any musical talent (check out the first THE ICE demo for proof), doing my own zine just came natural, and since I was asked by the SOUL SEARCH guys to distribute their demo in Europe, I just thought “what the hell, let’s do all of this under one flag”. I mean, I studied business sciences, so running a label should also come natural to me, haha.


What is the difference between SAVE MY SOUL Records and other hardcore labels?

I don’t think we’re really that different from other labels. I mean, not a lot of them are run full time or are really making any money. But, we try to set us apart from the mass of labels by only releasing stuff we’re really into, no half assed records or demos. Oh yeah, and I try to ship out stuff as soon as I received the payment, which is something a lot of labels should take as an example, haha.


How you mentioned above you guys publish a fanzine besides releasing music. SAVE MY SOUL Records´ „Fanzine No. 1” contains stuff about FLOORPUNCH, THE ICE, ANIMAL INSTINCT, a Scott Vogel (TERROR) Interview and a lot of other stuff. Please tell us something about this fanzine.

Well, Christoph and me sat together for about an hour each to come up with the questions for the interviews, most of them were conducted by email unfortunately, except for the interview with Mike “The Gook”, which is the one I am most satisfied with. We didn’t write any reviews, since I still do that for Ox Fanzine from time to time, and I feel like reviews become outdated pretty quick these days, so it’s just interviews and 2 band related articles. We sold 230 copies within 3 months, which I think is pretty rad for a brandnew DIY zine.


Are there plans for „Fanzine No. 2” in the near future?

Yes, we already have finished 2 interviews (Mike Dijan and Jeff Perlin + Toby Morse), which I still need to type down, though. Running the label is taking up more of my free time than I thought, so the zine is a bit on the backburner right now, unfortunately, but I hope to have issue 2 out within the next 2-3 months.


How much time (and nerves also) do you spend for SMS?

That depends, officially it’s about 4 hours a week, but if you count in the time spent doing bookkeeping and packing + sending orders, it’s quite some hours on top.


As we mentioned above SMS is a DIY label for hardcore music. Please describe, what “Do It Yourself” means to you.

“If you want something done right, do it yourself” – unfortunately, I do adhere to this sentence way too often, which means that I am doing most of the work for SMS, even if time might be a limiting factor for me sometimes when it comes to stuff like packing orders. Actually, screw that answer… DIY could perfectly sum up my love life, haha.


How does it work? If we have a band, could we just ask SAVE MY SOUL to release our stuff or do you choose the bands?

Yup. It’s simple as that, even though I don’t think I can afford doing any new releases besides the ones already planned this year. Maybe some extra demo tapes, since they mostly sell pretty fast. Any band can get in contact with us, but please be reasonable and check out the stuff we released so far… we wouldn’t even consider putting out a deathcore band, for example, since that’s just not what we’re into.


What experiences / previous knowledge do you expect from a band that wants to be signed to SMS?

First off, we don’t “sign” bands. We expect them to be cool guys and have a good sound, that’s it I guess.


Which bands are signed to SMS right now?

Like I said, we don’t sign bands, but we did demos for SOUL SEARCH, ENFORCERS, WORLD EATER and LOOK MY WAY, a brand new 7’’ from THE PLATOON and will hopefully be doing a new 7’’ by THE ICE soon, as well as future stuff from HANGIN’ TOUGH, WORLD EATER and LOOK MY WAY.


Apart from the costs – which bands would you like to work with?

I could list half of the Reaper roster right now, haha. We thought about doing a DYNAMO discography LP, but after speaking to this guy I know who tried the same thing, I don’t think it’ll ever happen. I would like to do another release with SOUL SEARCH somewhere down the line again, and I am hoping that FINAL WORD will someday get around to record those new songs they have been playing during the last years.


Recently SAVE MY SOUL Records released a demo (75 tapes, 100 CD`s) of a new traditional oldschool hardcore band: LOOK MY WAY (ex-ANOTHER VICTORY, ex-KILL THIS DREAM, ex-CHEAP THRILLS…). How is the feedback so far? You can download the demo for free right now. So, is this demo sold out?

The feedback is great, we sold out of 75 tapes and 100 CD’s within 3 or 4 weeks. The band made another batch of 50 CD’s, this might be the last pressing, so if you want a copy, you’d better get in touch with them ASAP.


And do you offer any other free downloads?

All demo releases are or were available for download from the band, some even before we made copies of the tapes. The links are on the bands’ MySpace and Facebook pages, so check them out, and if you enjoy them, please buy a copy.


Your latest release is the limited (330 copies) new 7“ by THE PLATOON. This nice piece of vinyl is called “Birth To Box” and contains 4 new tracks. The exclusive Platoon(-movie) rip off pre-order cover (limited to 50) was only available through Save My Soul Records. Did many fans utilize this pre-order deal? Is this 7” still available?

We sold 39 package deals, the majority of those within the first week after pre-orders were announced. The remaining 7’’s were sold separately. The regular pressing is still available, if you want to buy a copy or get some for your distro, please get in touch.


Most of the releases are demo tapes and vinyl pressings. Why?

Cause that’s they all good hardcore releases should be released. No one really needs CD’s these days, since everything is available as MP3’s, and CD sales figures have been falling rapidly during the last years, so why invest in a dying medium, when vinyl is coming back, looks and sounds that much better? Of course, nostalgia also plays a big part in this decision…


Which releases are planned for the near future?

Like I said, we will be doing a new 7’’ by THE ICE soon, as well as the HANGIN’ TOUGH demo tape and possibly a WORLD EATER split 7’’.


Any other news?

Well, this is kind of personal, but I am in some trouble financially, since I unexpectedly need a new car, so I am selling a lot of stuff to finance the car and keep SMS Records going at the same time, you can check out the list of stuff I am selling here:

Please tell us something about your Top-Friends on your MySpace-Account.

We obviously have all the bands we released on there, as well as the Sinner And The Saint, Andreas’ (the guy who drew our logo and the cover of the „Birth to box“ 7’’) tattoo shop. Also, CHEAP THRILLS, Christoph’s first band, is on there, since they were just a really great band, which, in my opinion, never really got the credit they deserved.


Do you like the new design and the new handling of MySpace?

Screw MySpace, I hardly ever log on there since my PC always seems close to shutting itself down while loading the page. I can’t stand it at all, and since none of my friends seem to use MySpace anymore, I don’t see any reason in being active on there, except for posting news on the label.


Everyone who is into HC should know, that fans keep a band and the scene alive by buying CD´s (vinyl, tapes), merch and visiting shows. Any words for those who just download music (illegaly)?

If you only download stuff for free, at least don’t be a leech at shows and support the bands by paying entrance and buying a shirt. If you don’t even do that and only “support hardcore” by running your mouth on the net: get lost, you don’t have any place in our scene. It really is that simple. Without anyone buying releases, this thing of ours will die, at least they’ll have free bandwith to download midget porn or whatever then…


Are there any plans to organize a SAVE MY SOUL show with all the signed bands?

Actually, we were planning to do a show with our german bands this February, but since there were rumors about one of our non-european bands touring Europe, these plans were put on hold until that happens.

Yo, erst einmal vielen Dank an Kalle von FOR MY ENEMY, dass er sich die Zeit nimmt, um einige Fragen zu beantworten! Danke Kalle :-)

Danke fürs Interview!


Euch Jungs gibt es nun seit Anfang / Mitte 2007. Was hat euch dazu bewegt, eine Band zu gründen und Musik zu machen?

Wir kannten uns alle schon seit längerer Zeit und waren auf den gleichen Konzerten, jeder konnte mindestens ein Instrument spielen, dann entstand die Idee eine Band zu machen - ziemlich simpel also...


Wer sind eure aktuellen Mitglieder und wer war mal bei FOR MY ENEMY?

FME sind: Anton-Vocals, Arne-Gitarre, Luc-Drums und ich spiele Bass. Zum Anfang der Band hat Arne Schlagzeug gespielt und ist dann Ende 2008 an die Gitarre gewechselt, für ihn kam dann Luc in die Band und Martin (Gitarrist von Anfang-2008) ist gegangen.


Und warum diese Line-Ups-Wechsel?

Martin hatte den Spaß an der ganzen Sache verloren und Arne hatte sowieso mehr Bock auf Gitarre. Luc ist ein langjähriger Freund und war immer dabei und von daher war es das Naheliegendste und es hat sich bis heute bewährt.


Gibt es neben FOR MY ENEMY noch andere (Musik-)Projekte?

Momentan nicht, Arne hat mal als Gitarrist bei SUCKAPUNCH ausgeholfen und auch ich habe für die Jungs schon einige Shows gespielt. Ansonsten habe ich mal eine Show für REDUCTION gespielt. Das waren aber nur Aushilfen, ein wirkliches Nebenprojekt hat keiner von uns weil unsere ganze Kreativität für FME draufgeht.


Wenn ihr euch mit jemanden unterhaltet, der absolut keine Ahnung von Hardcore / Metal / Beatdown usw. hat, wie würdet ihr ihm eure Musik beschreiben?

Diese Situation kenne ich nur zu gut, ich sage dann immer "Hardrock im weitesten Sinne". Je nachdem wie mein Gegenüber reagiert versuche ich es etwas genauer zu formulieren und so tastet man sich in Richtung Hardcore. Der Satz der am häufigsten kommt ist "Wieso ne Band? Für Hardcore braucht man doch nur einen Turntable..."


Auf einigen Seiten im Internet finden sich dazu einige Worte - was hat es mit der sogenannten „What Counts For You“ EP auf sich? Wurde das Teil veröffentlicht?

Respekt für die Recherche! Ich hätte nicht gedacht, oder wohl eher gehofft, dass sich davon noch was im Internet findet. Die haben wir (glaube ich) 2007 aufgenommen, aber an die Öffentlichkeit ist das Teil nicht gekommen ;-)


Nach langem (sicherlich ärgerlichen) Hin und Her kam 2009 endlich eure erste EP auf den Markt – „Welcome To The Dirt“. Sechs Tracks werden einem dort in die Fresse gekloppt. Einige Worte zu dieser Veröffentlichung? Seid ihr damit zufrieden?

Ja und Nein. Ich denke mit der Produktion etc. kann man zufrieden sein, besonders wenn man bedenkt, dass wir damals noch alle Schüler waren und kaum Geld hatten, denn wir haben für die Verhältnisse einiges auf die Beine gestellt. Es ist aber kein Zufall, dass man auf heutigen FME Shows keines dieser Lieder mehr zu hören bekommt, denn musikalisch ist da wirklich nicht viel los. Ich bin froh diese EP gemacht zu haben denn es hat uns auf jedenfall weitergebracht, auch wenn die Lieder darauf nicht der Knaller sind.


Auf dieser und der neuen CD sind außerdem noch Features zu finden. Wer sind die Features und wie kam es zu der Zusammenarbeit?

Auf der "Welcome to the dirt" sind zwei features, eins mit Bibo von AIRTIME, eins mit Raf von GeENTLEMEN`S SPORTS. Wir wollten ein bisschen Abwechslung reinbekommen und die beiden haben ein fettes Organ. Außerdem sind sie auch DSA Member, von daher lag es nahe sie zu fragen.
Auf der neuen Scheibe singt Samis REDUCTION den Titeltrack "Dark Days". Samis ist ein guter Freund und Member der SOSF so wie wir, außerdem hat er eine der coolsten Stimmen die es momentan in Deutschland gibt. Wir haben ihn also gefragt und auch wenn er einen recht weiten Weg hat, hat er es zum Glück geschafft und das hat sich definitiv gelohnt, wie man z.B. auf MySpace hören kann!


Ihr habt auf Myspace 2 neue Songs hochgeladen. Die beiden Tracks sind ja schon etwas anders als die auf der "Welcome To The Dirt"-EP. „Erwachsener“ kann man sagen. Wie kam es zu dem kleinen Stilwechsel?

Ich kann schonmal versprechen, dass auch der Rest ganz anders klingt. Ich denke mal, dass es sich dabei um eine ganz normale Entwicklung handelt, der alte Kram ist ja ganz witzig aber einfach nicht das, wohin wir musikalisch wollen. Mit der Zeit hat sich auch die Musik verändert die wir hören. Beim Schreiben der "Dark Days" Tracks sind dann ganz andere und neue Einflüsse hinzugekommen und so war es dann die logische Folge, dass diese CD ganz anders klingt.


Während es auf der eben genannten CD textlich eher Richtung „Dicke-Eier-Proll-Kram“ geht, sind diese inhaltlich tiefer bzw. haben einen tieferen Sinn, oder?

Ja! Es handelt sich bei "Dark Days" ja wie gesagt um ein Konzept Album, dass entstanden ist weil die Texte die die Band geschrieben hat von selbst ein Thema verfolgt haben und im Gegensatz zu altem Kram viel tiefgründiger und aussagekräftiger sind.


Verarbeitet ihr viele persönliche Erfahrungen in eueren Texten?

Na klar! Daraus entstehen unsere Texte. Die Texte handeln nicht von persönlichem Kram der uns passiert, es geht dabei vorallem um Eindrücke, die wir vom Gesamtgeschehen um uns herum erhalten. So ist auch die Konzept-CD "Dark Days" entstanden, beim Schreiben wurde immer klarer, dass es sich textlich um ein sehr dunkles Weltbild handeln würde und so haben wir unseren Sound, das Layout usw. darauf abgestimmt sodass im Endeffekt der Soundtrack für die kommenden "Dark Days" enstanden ist.


Denkt ihr, es ist wichtig, eine Message rüberzubringen?

Ich denke mal, dass das jede Band und für sich selbst wissen muss. Mich wundert es aber wenn ich mir Lyrics ansehe und dabei nur einen Haufen von "Hardcore-Floskeln" entdecke. Jeder Sänger oder Textverantwortliche sollte doch soviel zu sagen haben, dass er einen Text schreibt, der nicht nur irgendein sinnfreies Gelaber enthält, hauptsache es passt irgendwie und klingt irgendwie asozial.


FOR MY ENEMY sind ebenfalls ein Teil der DSA – der Dirt Style Army, richtig?

Ja, seit 2008(kurz nach der DSA Gründung) zusammen mit SUCKAPUNCH, BRICKTOP, GENTLEMEN`S SPORTS und AIRTIME. Außerdem sind wir und die gesamte DSA Teil der SOSF die es auch im Ruhrgebiet, den USA und Japan gibt!


Im Sommer letzten Jahres führten wir ein Interview mit ebenfalls aus Hamburg stammenden GENTLEMEN`S SPORTS DSA (s. u.). Dort fragten wir die Jungs, wie es mit einem DSA-Sampler und / oder Split CD aussieht. Die Antwort war, dass etwas geplant ist. Gibt es darüber mittlerweile etwas Aktuelleres zu berichten?

Die reine DSA Split ist leider momentan etwas in den Hintergrund gerückt, weil jede Band soviele eigene Projekte laufen hatte. So haben wir nicht die Zeit gefunden pro Band 2 Lieder für die Split aufzunehmen. GENTLEMEN`S SPORTS machen aber eine SOSF Split mit GLADIATOR aus den USA und GORILLA CROWS aus Japan, die wahrscheinlich irgendwann im März erscheinen wird!


Gibt es sonst noch spannende News von der einen oder anderen DSA-Band?

AIRTIME haben gerade ihre EP releast, ansonsten sind alle fleißig, schreiben Tracks und spielen Shows ;-)


Mittlerweile habt ihr ein Label gefunden. Glückwunsch dazu!! 2010 habt ihr bei MARKED FOR DEATH RECORDS gesigned. Wie kam es dazu? Habt ihr eure Tracks dort eingeschickt oder wurdet ihr angesprochen?

Manu von MARKED FOR DEATH Records hat uns bei MySpace angeschrieben und sein Interesse bekundet. Kurz darauf war er mit BRAVESTAR und NOTHING TO REGRET in Hamburg auf einer DSA Show wo wir mit ihm persönlich reden konnten und die Sache war geritzt!


Ende 2010 / Anfang 2011 ward ihr im Studio, um euer Album, welches am 18.02.2011 kommt einzuspielen. Was gibt´s dazu zu sagen? Wie war es im Studio?

Wir haben ja jetzt zum vierten mal bei Philipp von 48 Volt Studios aufgenommen und die Stimmung war gewohnt gut. Natürlich gibt es einen Unterschied ob man jetzt 2 Tracks wie bei der Brainwash/Just do it Session oder ein ganzes Album mit 10 Tracks aufnimmt. Es hat echt Spaß gemacht, aber wir waren alle froh als wir nach 4 Tagen zu jeweils etwa 10 Stunden aufnehmen aus dem Studio rauskonnten und erstmal nichts hören mussten. Umso geiler war es dann die ersten Rough Mixes zu hören und zu wissen, dass das Ding ne Bombe wird!!!




Auf YouTube.com findet man z. B. ein Video namens „For My Enemy DSA – Brainwash“. Während man dem Track lauscht, sieht man einen Zusammenschnitt von diversen Live-Shows, Studioaufnahmen und einigen anderem Zeugs. Schon mal über eine „echte“ Video-Auskopplung nachgedacht?

"Echter" gehts jawohl nicht! Nein, ich denke sowas kommt erstmal nicht in Frage aber nach der Releaseshow am 18.02. in Hamburg und dem Cold Live Fest in Münster am Tag darauf wo wir auch spielen wirds wahrscheinlich ein Promovideo für die CD mit live Ausschnitten geben!

Habt ihr schon einige negative Show-Erfahrungen machen müssen?

Ich glaube wir haben noch nie nach einer Show gesagt, dass das jetzt totale Scheiße war. Wir haben aber auch schon etwa 2 Shows im tiefsten Osten gespielt wo sich wirklich keine Sau hat blicken lassen, trotzdem war es immer witzig weil meist noch ein paar Jungs von uns dabei sind und dann ist Party vorprogrammiert.


Was war bisher - eurer Meinung nach – bester Auftritt?

Das ist wirklich schwierig... Ich denke eigentlich nach jedem Auftritt "was ne Bombe" aber ich denke letztes Jahr in Ulm mit Suckapunch war eine sehr geile Show, natürlich das FILLED WITH HATE Festival im letzten Sommer war eine sehr geile Show, Fredericia HC-Festival 2009, Berlin 2009 und natürlich jede Hamburg Show! Shows sind einfach die Höhepunkte und deswegen wissen wir jede einzelne zu schätzen!


Und warum sollte man sich ein Konzert von FOR MY ENEMY ansehen?

Weil die Musik gut ist ;-) Ich denke wer uns auf CD nicht leiden kann, wird auch live nicht auf seine Kosten kommen aber diejenigen, die mögen was wir jetzt mit der "Dark Days" Platte raushauen, werden live definitiv nicht enttäuscht sein weil wir eine echt geile live Band sind und die Shows wirklich immer eine ordentliche Portion Randale bedeuten, dass kann ich nachdem wir mittlerweile wirklich viele Shows gespielt haben mal so behaupten! Da wird schonmal im Takt geschunkelt und das Tanzbein geschwungen...


Was meint ihr, warum von einigen Leuten Hardcore oft mit Gewalt assoziiert wird? Es geht ja nicht immer um harten Mosh. Aber so was rückt die Szene schließlich in ein schlechtes Licht, oder?

Gewalt ist einfach ein Teil dieser Szene und deswegen ist die Assoziation auch nicht ganz falsch. Man wird keine Band finden die dieses Thema in ihren Texten nicht behandelt, die Top Youtube Videos sind mit den härtestens Mosh-Szenen ausgestattet, je bescheuerter der Spruch auf dem T-Shirt ist, desto besser verkauft es sich. Wer es jedoch nicht schafft zu sehen, dass das nur ein Teil dieser Szene ist, verdient es auch nicht die anderen Seiten an dem ganzen kennenzulernen und mir ist es ehrlich egal was für ein Licht von außen auf das Ganze fällt, denn ich weiß wofür ich stehe und das macht meiner Meinung nach Hardcore aus.


Was ist eure Lieblings-Hardcore-Band?

Wir haben natürlich alle verschiedene Vorlieben aber ich denke, wenn ich sage, dass das beste Album 2010 von PROWLER kam wird mir keiner in der Band widersprechen. Die neue ALL OUT WAR ist aber auch mindestens genauso gut. Nur um kurz zu umreissen, was wir so hören...

DIE FOR YOUR HONOR Interview

DIE FOR YOUR HONOR (GER) - Eine junge, aufstrebende Beatdown-Hardcore Band aus dem Hause von MASSIVE BLODSHED RECORDS.


Nachfolgendes Interview wurde mit Casi, dem Sänger der Band geführt. Casi, vielen Dank, dass du dir die Zeit nimmst, unsere Fragen zu beantworten. Legen wir dann auch direkt mal los!

Die aus dem Ruhrgebiet stammende Band DIE FOR YOUR HONOR wurde 2007 gegründet. Bis zum heutigen Zeitpunkt sind noch alle Gründungsmitglieder in der Band, oder? Also keine internen Wechsel?

Bisher nicht! Leider wird sich das zukünftig ändern! Mehr dazu werden wir bei der Show am 19.02. in Münster bekannt geben… Auch wenn wir, im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Bands, sehr lange in einer Formation zusammen gespielt haben, müssen wir uns leider jetzt von einem Mitglied trennen!


Was veranlasste euch seinerzeit, die Band zu gründen?

Die Band existiert, damals noch unter anderem Namen, bereits noch länger – seit 2005 um den Dreh, mit wenigen, nicht nennenswerten Auftritten, haha! Ich bin damals hinzugekommen, die Musikrichtung wurde umgekrempelt, Kevin, unser zweiter Gitarrist kam ebenfalls dazu, die Band wurde umbenannt und so begann DIE FOR YOUR HONOR dann im Januar 2007!


Und welche Bands haben euch am meisten beeinflusst?

Puhh, schwierige Frage – eigentlich kaum zu beantworten! Irgendwie wurde glaube ich jeder von etwas anderem beeinflusst. Ich persönlich eigentlich eher durch Oldschool-Klamotten, die sich in DIE FOR YOUR HONOR jetzt nicht unbedingt widerspiegeln… Wirklich schwierig zu sagen, viele von uns hören auch Rap und ähnliches. Ich persönlich auch, aber METALLICA ist für mich wohl wirklich der Anfang gewesen und bis heute für mich die großartigste Band der Welt! Ich glaube, dass viele Einflüsse, die sehr unterschiedlich sind, in DFYH kombiniert sind und doch hat man sich irgendwie auf diesen Stil festgelegt… strange…


Wie würdest du jemanden, der weder Hardcore noch Metal hört, DIE FOR YOUR HONOR in einem Satz beschreiben?

Harte Musik, die die tägliche Scheiße des Lebens widerspiegelt – einfach mal anhören!


Was denkst du, unterscheidet DFYH von anderen Beatdown-Bands? Warum sollte man euch nicht in einem Topf mit denselbigen schmeissen?

Der Punkt ist glaube ich, dass wir versuchen, uns selbst weiter zu entwickeln und Neues auszuprobieren. Zwar versucht das jede Band, oder sagt sie zumindest, aber oft kommt da nun mittlerweile diese Hardpop/Technocore-Scheiße raus… Irgendwie so gar nicht meins… Jetzt, wo wir gerade frisch aus dem Studio kommen: Hör’ dir einfach mal die neue Platte an, definitiv mal neue und meiner Meinung nach gute neue Einflüsse – und trotzdem wir selbst!


Ihr seid noch eine recht junge Band. Wo liegt euer Alterdurchschnitt und wird man als „Jungspund“ benachteiligt oder fällt das Alter hier kaum ins Gewicht?

Hahahahaha, jau! Lustiges Thema! Also mittlerweile sind wir zwischen 18 und 22, wobei ich mit zwei Jahren Abstand der Jüngste bin! Allerdings gibt’s uns nun ja auch bereits vier Jahre und ich kam mit 13 in die Band! Eigentlich war das nie wirklich ein Problem – komischerweise! Ich kann mich grad kaum an Sachen erinnern, wo das irgendwie ein Problem war… Klar, vielleicht gab’s da viele Vorurteile – aber eigentlich verflogen die schnell wieder. Das Beste ist eigentlich, dass damals Leute gehört haben: „Ey, da ist einer 14 von denen!“ – und dann ist jeder zu unserem Drummer hingerannt, der zwei Jahre älter ist, als ich hahahaha. Für mich lustig – für ihn eher nicht haha.


Eure Texte behandeln größtenteils all die Frustrationen des alltäglichen Lebens. Verarbeitet ihr persönliche Erfahrungen oder werden manche Sachen auch „an den Haaren herbeigezogen?“

Stimmt genau! Ich verarbeite eigentlich alles Negative und Frustrierende, was ich erlebt habe oder erlebe in meinen Texten. An den Haaren herbeigezogen ist dabei eigentlich nichts, da ich keine Geschichten oder bestimmte Ereignisse wiedergebe – zumindest nicht auf dem direkten Weg. Mich pisst es halt an, dass auf der Welt einfach viel Scheiße passiert, die immer tot geschwiegen wird. Aber nicht nur das, auch persönliche Probleme und Ereignisse sitzen teilweise auch nach Jahren noch immer in mir, die Texte spiegeln das wider! Trotzdem denke ich, dass das vielen Leuten auf der einen Seite die Augen öffnen kann, auf der anderen Seite aber auch auf vieles scheißen sollte, um drüber hinwegzukommen. Das neue Album heißt ja auch genau aus diesem Grund „NO FAIR WORLD“ und ist textlich eigentlich sehr einheitlich. Ich finde, dass Texte wichtig sind und es sich definitiv lohnt, mal einen Blick zu riskieren.


Anstatt mit einer Demo auf den Markt zu gehen, wurde im August 2009 eure selftitled Debut-EP über MASSIVE BLOODSHED RECORDS released. Wie kam es dazu, dass ihr keine – wie viele andere Bands es machen – DIY-Demo veröffentlicht habt?

Also wir haben 2007 mal zwei Songs aufgenommen, die auf Myspace standen, dann halt mehr als zwei Jahre lang nichts… Wie es dazu kam? Puhh, also eigentlich ne gute Frage! Wir haben eigentlich von Beginn an sehr sehr viele Konzerte gespielt und irgendwie fast jede Woche in 2007 und 2008. 2008 haben wir uns dann gesagt, dass wir doch mal vernünftig was aufnehmen sollten. Wir sind dann ins Studio gegangen und haben losgelegt, bevor die Zusammenarbeit mit MBR entstand…


Und wie entstand dann die Zusammenarbeit mit MBR?

Haha, ich war beim Samis an irgendeinem Abend… Ich glaube, weil ich ihm Flyer oder so was rumgebracht habe… Und irgendwie joaaaaaaa, eh, kam’s dann dazu, haha!


Würdet ihr in Zukunft nochmals über MBR releasen?

Definitiv! Wir sind sehr zufrieden, da einfach alles stimmt! Aus diesem Grund releasen wir unser nächstes Album ja auch über MBR!


Und wie ist das bisherige Feedback zu der ersten CD? Eher positiv oder doch negativ?

Im Großen und Ganzen positiv! Musikalisch habe ich kaum Schlechtes gehört. Der Sound, also die Produktionsqualität, vor allem auf das Schlagzeug, wurde öfters bemängelt…


Beim Track "Remember These Words" nimmt MBR-Mitbegründer Samis von der Band REDUCTION ebenfalls das Mikro in die Hand. Hat sich dieses Feature zufällig ergeben oder war das seit dem Signing bei MBR so geplant?

Sowas weiß ich irgendwie gar nicht haha. Ging’ alles sehr schnell, aber ich glaube, das haben wir an dem Abend, wo wir gesignt wurden, beschlossen.


Gibt es noch andere Features, die du gern auf einer nächsten DFYH-Veröffentlichung hättest?

Kurze und knappe Antwort: JA! Auf der jetzt am 19.02. erscheinenden CD wird’s zwar keine Features geben, allerdings zukünftig schon…


Wenn ihr euch eine Band aussuchen könntet, mit denen ihr eine Split aufnehmen könntet – welche Band wäre dies?

Kann ich gar nicht sagen, für mich gibt es viele großartige Bands. Aber da würden wir uns glaube ich eh nie einig werden hahaha.


Bleiben wir beim Thema: Wie schaut`s mit der Zukunft von DIE FOR YOUR HONOR aus? Am 19.02.2011 ist die Release-Show eurer zweiten CD, richtig? Erzähl doch bitte was über die neue Platte.

Ja, das meiste habe ich ja bereits gesagt. Die Platte ist ziemlich negativ, daher auch der Titel „NO FAIR WORLD“. Wir haben definitiv neue Sachen ausprobiert, sind dabei aber trotzdem wir selbst geblieben… Also wir haben uns um einiges weiterentwickelt, das legt sich allerdings auf’s technische, nicht auf das Genre aus. Wir sind auf jeden Fall SEHR zufrieden mit dem Endergebnis! Auch die Produktionsqualität ist noch um Längen besser als damals! Neun Tracks umfasst die Platte. Wir sind sehr gespannt, wie das Feedback dazu wird…


Auf welchen zukünftigen Shows kann man sonst DIE FOR YOUR HONOR live sehen?

Das wird sich demnächst ergeben… Wir haben uns jetzt erstmal vollkommen auf die CD konzentriert und kümmern uns demnächst wieder um Live-Shows…


Warum sollte man sich DFYH mal auf der Bühne anschauen?

Weil wir einfach total bescheuert sind hahahahaha


Mit welchen Bands habt ihr bisher schon so die Bühne geteilt?

Vielen… The Boss, Arkangel, Enemy Ground, CDC, usw. Also waren wirklich viele sehr geile Bands dabei! Aber es gibt ja immer Wünsche!


Und welche Show hat euch am meisten Spass gemacht?

Kann ich kaum sagen, dafür gab’ es wirklich zu viele, die sau cool waren…


Casi, du selbst veranstaltest selbst unter dem Namen „Cold Life Entertainment“ Shows. Am 19.02.2011 zum Beispiel findet in Münster das Cold Life Entertainment Fest 1 mit Bands wie IN BLOOD WE TRUST, PROVIDENCE, PROWLER etc. statt.
Was ist noch so alles geplant?

Ja, das ist richtig! Also, wie du bereits sagtest, COLD LIFE FEST VOL 1, dann im Mai ein kleines Konzert in unserer Heimatstadt und dann sind noch viele weitere Sachen gerade in Planung… Ich geb’ mein Bestes, hehe!


Und wie kamst du auf die Idee „Cold Life Entertainment“ zu gründen?

Yoa, ich bin ja schon länger in solchen Sachen involviert und „COLD LIFE ENTERTAINMENT“ war schon lange ein Wunsch von mir… Läuft auch sehr sehr gut bisher, sogar besser, als ich es mir vorgestellt habe! Ich muss aber auch erstmal warm laufen ;)


Mit welchen Bands würdest du gerne einmal eine Show veranstalten?

Da gibt’s wirklich zu viele… und vor allem sind nach oben hin, keine Grenzen gesetzt…


Können auch Bands auf dich zukommen und sagen „Hey Casi, wir würden gern mal für Cold Life Entertainment zocken!“?

Prinzipiell ja! Ich lasse eigentlich viele Bands spielen, die weniger bekannt sind, ich versuche da schon, anderen Chancen zu geben…

NINEBAR Interview

Ninebar (UK) – another pissed off and dirty Beatdown Hardcore-band from RUCKTION RECORDS.


First we wanna thank you for spending time in this interview!

NINEBAR started in 1997. Please tell us something about the beginning of NINEBAR.

The original nucleus of the band is four friends who grew up together in South London, got into hardcore in the mid to late 90s through seeing bands such as MADBALL, SICK OF IT ALL and later WARZONE. Became more involved in the underground / DIY aspect through all the old BACK TA BASICS releases, the early UKHC scene bands such as KNUCKLEDUST, UP AGAINST IT, PUBLIC DISTURBANCE, STAMPING GROUND etc.
Another important source of information back then was TIME FOR SOME ACTION, a newsletter Pierre from KNUCKLEDUST used to hand out at shows which exposed us to plenty of new music from the UK and overseas.
All this and more inspired us to start the band and we played quite a few shows with various lineups, but this stabilised around 1999/2000 and since then we've only changed bassist and added a second guitarist.


How long does the actual line-up exist?

Since the early 00's, I forget exactly when Chris joined but our line-up has remained unchanged since then.
As well as the normal lineup we have friends like Ian from DICTION and Pieman from HELLBENT DIEHARD who can fill in for Nicky when necessary, as he has had heavy work commitments recently.

Are any members in side projects beyond 9bar?

Matty also plays guitar for KARTEL and INJURY TIME, Nicky is of course in the legendary KNUCKLEDUST, and Chris also plays guitar in DICTION, as well as singing for HELLBENT DIEHARD who unfortunately are inactive these days.
I just started on vocals in a new project, but there’s not too much to say at this stage as we've only practiced a few times.


Who of you write the lyrics?

Lyric writing is split evenly between me and TB the other singer.
We generally write them separately and then nearer recording we discuss, adapt to each others vocal style and suggest alterations, additions and improvements.


And what are the songs about?

Loss, pride, alienation, destruction, persistence, dedication, hatred for fakes, users and bullshitters and love for our friends, crew and home town.


What made you say “I want to be in a band”?

Getting to know the guys in KNUCKLEDUST, who we already recognised from shows.
Their early encouragement and the fact that they were down to earth people like us, rather than some unaproachable rockstars that didn't want to know you, spurred us on to start playing.


Is RUCKTION RECORDS the one and only label for you?

Without a doubt. Theres just so much UK history and quality there, from sadly defunct legends such as DIVIDE and TAKING NAMES, consistant favourites like SPECIAL MOVE through to newer releases such as CHAINS OF HATE.
Run by guys our age who grew up alongside us in the scene, and are in it for the right reasons rather than being swayed by money or trends.
And of course it doesn't hurt that a couple of the guys in NINE BAR are involved in one way or another ha ha.


A few months ago we interviewed the guys of PROWLER. We asked about the general collaboration with another RUCKTION bands. They gave us a positive feedback. What would you say?

Not sure I understand, maybe I answered it in the previous question? I fucking love PROWLER, they were like Londons secret weapon for ages with not much recorded but some crazy reactions when they did play.
Good fun hanging out and playing with those guys, they can write a MEAN tune and I'm glad to see them finally have something released and get out there.


If you could have anyone do guest vocals on your next recording – besides the guys of RUCKTION RECORDS - who would it be and why?

I can’t think of anyone I’d rather have as guest vocalists than the two guys we’ve got on the upcoming CD – Pierre from KNUCKLEDUST/BUN DEM OUT and DBS from KARTEL/INJURY TIME. Both have been good friends of ours for over 10 years and are still to be found dancing and singing along at our shows, as well as being a constant inspiration with their encouraging words and the creativity they put into their bands.
If it really has to be someone unrelated to RUCKTION, I’m gonna go with Alain from OUT FOR BLOOD, one of my all-time favourite European bands. Never get tired of ‘Strive to Survive’ and it was really good to see them in 2010.


At the start of 2010 you guys recorded 12 brand new songs for an upcoming full length release. It`ll be released on RUCKTION RECORDS. Please tell us something about this cd.

We’ve been writing it for the last couple of years, I think it gives a good impression of what we’re about with its mix of shorter, faster songs and longer heavier ones, a touch of melody and groove and maybe a wider variety of influences, also more guitar solos this time around.


Could you give us an exact date?

Not just yet, we just got the recording mastered and later on in February 2011 we will get together and take the inlay photos.


On MySpace fans are allowed to hear fresh new stuff. Is this the only one or will you upload some other track(s)?

At the time of writing this we have just put a couple of mastered songs up on our Facebook and Myspace pages.


And what about your previous releases? Are all the cds / Tapes with NINEBAR on it still available? Or are they sold out?

Yeah, the remastered version of our debut MCD (which features an earlier live set from 1999), our SOUTHBOUND split with our brothers in KARTEL and DICTION and the RAISING THE BAR full length are all still available.


Fans of NINEBAR know the video “Read These Boks”. Are there any plans for another video?

That video came about because our friend Khaled was doing a college project, and knew that we’d have some good ideas and would be able to get it together at short notice. It was fun to do, I like how it came out, and it captured a moment in time for us, with some people in it that aren’t around as much these days.
However, this isn’t really what I want to concentrate on as a priority with NINE BAR. My favourite aspects of being in the band are playing live, writing new music and designing our shirts, so miming to our recordings on film doesn’t really do it for me.
That said, its 2011 and I recognise the current importance of such things to promote our music, so maybe I will look at selecting a song from the new CD to make a video for.


Let`s talk about live shows. Do you guys know how many times you hit Germany?

We've played Germany a couple of times. Once way back in the earlier part of the decade, with KNUCKLEDUST, SETTLE THE SCORE, CLOBBERIN TIME, HARSH TRUTH and maybe some others. I forget where exactly.
And in Summer 2009 we played JZE Papestrasse in Essen, it was a 2 day fest and bands I recall from the day we played are SPECIAL MOVE, XREPRESENTX and SHATTERED REALM.
We're also playing BRINGING BACK THE GLORY fest in March 2011. I'm looking forward to that a lot as I travelled to last years with my good friends in INJURY TIME, great day with a well chosen mix of bands.


What was your best show in UK?

DAMAGE CONTROL 2009 (yearly London fest organised by Pierre from KNUCKLEDUST) was pretty crazy.
Any show at the 12bar in London is nuts, just because the place is the size of my living room. You have to really watch yourself in there, I generally end up squashed against the stage or sitting on it, with my free hand in front of me to avoid getting kicked in the face ha ha. I love that place, definitely the home of London HC for the last few years.
Too many others over the years to remember really, one that I was thinking about the other day that stuck out was when we played with THROWDOWN years ago, not our type of crowd at all but a bunch of our friends turned up and went nuts.


And in Germany?

I guess out of the two times we played there I prefer the first, even though we drove all the way from the UK, watched a couple of bands, played and then drove back ha ha. I remember being cooped up in the KNUCKLEDUST van for 10 hours or so each way, so it felt really good to go off when we played, and I think that was actually the first time in mainland Europe with what went on to become our permanent lineup.
Second time in Essen was ok, nice big stage but there were crazy thunderstorms that day and so the venue was hot as fuck, wasn’t feeling the sound much either.


What were your favorite places to play?

Well any London show is an obvious one. We got to play 3 US dates in 2009 and Baltimore in particular was so fucking good, although everywhere we went people were really friendly and receptive. A definite high point in our history to play MD, PA and NJ, where so many influential bands past and present come from.
Another standout for us has to be Tournai in Belgium where we’ve played maybe 5 or 6 shows, always a good drunken time there with Baptiste and Bloodclaat Crew.


Are their any funny tour stories you wanna betray us?

The best time in recent years has been going to other parts of the UK or the mainland, usually Belgium, in a 50 seater coach organised by Pierre.
Too much funny shit went on there to know where to begin, people passing out in toilets, getting back onto the wrong coach and generally living up to the British abroad stereotype ha ha.


Are there any bands you would like to play with?

We’ve been fortunate enough to play with many of the bigger bands that originally inspired us, as well as some current favourites.
But we’ve never shared a stage with HARD TARGET or HORRORSTRUCK, two of my favourite UK bands from the last couple of years.

Do you see some changes in the scene? Positive ones or negative?

Well an obvious one would be the rise in importance of the internet, and I guess the positive and negative impacts of that stack up evenly against eachother.
Back in the 90s flyering was a big part of keeping yourself in the loop. You would always make sure to grab whatever you saw being handed out, and if we were putting on a show we always made the effort to flyer other shows and try and bring some new people over.
I think thats the kind of thing thats been lost to the net these days, physically putting yourelf out there rather than doing it from home, as well the whole mystique of finding records in shops you'd never seen before, randomly finding out bands were playing and so on.
But I don't wanna sound like TOO much of a jaded old bastard, 15 years on I still love checking out new bands and going to as many shows as I can, the net has helped out a lot with that too.


Please, tell us, what means hardcore for you?

Good friends, a place to be myself when I sometimes feel i don't belong anywhere, somewhere to create while also unleashing anger, agression and frustration.
And too much else to really put into words...

NASTY Interview

On every hardcore show you see not less than one kid with their merchandise. You see amazing stagedives, electrifying sing-a-longs, violent dancing. The crowd looses his mind and turns the dancefloor into a warzone. We`re talking about THE beatdown band. THE Terror beatdown band. We`re talking about NASTY (BE, GER).

We think that everybody should know you, but please introduce NASTY in a few sentences.

Nasty are Ludo (bass), Nash (Drums) Chris on Guitar and me (vocs). The band was founded in late 2005 and is based in Belgium and Germany. Till now we released a Demo and 3 full Lenght CDs.


Before NASTY there was a band called VAN DAMME. Some of the guys who are more than 2 years in Beatdown-hardcore should know this band. Tell us something about it, the namedropping and stuff like this.

Van Damme was started around 2001 and was more like a sideproject cause everyone involved had other Bands running.
We wanted to play a harder style cause this was what we grew up with. Im not sure about the namedropping... we played some local shows and spread a selmade demo (around 5 copies) on a show we didn't even play. After lots of lineupchanges we split up and restarted some month later with Nasty.


On the demo of VAN DAMME there is the classic track called „Cunthunt“. In the past NASTY played this song live. But actually fewer. Why?

Our Drummer swore by his mother never to play that song again.


You guys are from Germany and Belgium. How often do you rehearse and how does that work?

Normally we rehearse once a week. At the moment we practice in Aachen (Ger). Its like 20 km away from the place Ludo lives.


In the end of 2004 NASTY started their career. In 2005 the demo “The Beginning” crushed the scene. It´s sold out, isn’t it?

Yes it's sold out.


This brutal demo made an impact and in 2006 your first album was released. It is called “Declaring War” and the cover shows what the listener can expect. Two years later you released another version of this album. “Declaring Ware Redux” includes the songs of the demo, too. Why this re-release?

The Demo had a real good sound and Declaring War was sold out so we put it together.


One of the tracks of this album is called "Famebitch Holocaust". Are their many people who think that you are racists or crap like that,because of the word "Holocaust"?

We had a lot of issues cause we used the word Holocaust.


In the same year your next album “Aggression” hit the scene. There was handnumbered limited special edition (100 copies) of your album “Aggression”. This CD came out with a special HOLLY D. booklet with all new photos. Furthermore each CD was dedicated and signed by HOLLY herself. For the ones who don`t know HOLLY D. check google – if you`re old enough ;-)
Whom idea was it and do you wanna release a special CD like this again?

It was Goodlifes idea. We've been pretty fucked up cause of this spezial bullshit release. We even did not know about it until it was released. For us the music we do is something very serious and a way to communicate and express ourselves. We are not against porn but a pornactrice to present what we do is simply fail.


Since a few months the album “Give a shit” is out. Some words to your 3rd album?

Its shorter faster and rougher than the 2 before.


Amongst other things on your CD`s are features by SIX FT. DITCH, SURGE OF FURY. You gave your voice to bands like CIRCLE OF DEATH, SIX FT. DITCH… So, whom do you want on a next CD or with which band do you wanna work together?

Would be awesome to work with R-Kelly and Akon.


Most of your tracks are full of hate. They are dealing about our society, the hardcore scene, this fucked up world. Do you think it is important to have a message in a song , in your lyrics, on the stage?

I think that's what this music is about. Too many Bands don't care anymore... too many Kids too.


Do you know how many shows NASTY played yet?

2010 we played about 60 shows... not shure how much we played in the whole...


Aside from local shows in small locations and stuff like this you played on big festivals around the world, too. Where does NASTY prefer to play?

Its cool to play on big Festivals to reach some new people with our shit, but we enjoy more to play shows where there are no barriers between the Band and the audience...


In autumn 2010 NASTY toured through Europe with the dudes of FALLBRAWL. On Facebook – for example – you can find pictures of this tour. It looks like you guys had a lot of fun. What were the funniest and what the most unlovely moments?

The tour was a blast, nearly every show was great, we always had sleepingplaces, food... thx again to everybody involved makin it possible. There were no real unlovely moments during the tour that I can mention. There were some extremely funny ones but I cant talk about them :)


Topic FALLBRAWL: Matthi, you helped them out for a while, because they were searching for a new singer. How was this experience and would you do something like this again?

It was a great experience and an honour to me. I would always do this again!


If you could arrange a festival of your dreams – which bands would play?

R-Kelly, Michael Jackson, Akon, Kanye West, Bodycount, Steel Panther...


Do you think that there is a big difference between the german and the european hardcore-scene? What do you think about unity?

The German scene is the most fashin addicted... but it alway depends on where you are.
Unity is great but nowadays people are too cool to make it happen...


Not everybody likes beatdown like NASTY. How do you handle negative feedback and internet shittalk?

Its a good sign. Nasty has a clear message. So there have to be people that don't like what we say and do. If someone does not like the music we don't care. this is a matter of taste.


And what about bands who try to copy your style?

Selber Schuld !


Furthermore you surely know the german beatdown band CUNTHUNT 777. Their name is a dependence on the track of VAN DAMME. This band dedicated one song to you. Do you feel proud for this or do you think “nooo …. what the fuck?!”?

Doppelselberschuld !


What advice can you give to some of the newer (beatdown-) bands starting?

I dont feel in the position to give advices, everybody should do it his way... just be careful when labels offer you a contract..


In the world wide web you can find tons of NASTY videos. Ever deliberated about a NASTY DVD or something like that?

Already thought about it... but no actual plans...


Are there any bigger NASTY news for us in 2011?

After a short break we gonna play our first shows in march again. We recorded the new song "Look at me and Fuck you" for a compilation. we will put this song
online soon...

CITY TO CITY Interview

Sie nutzen ihre Musik als Waffe gegen bestehende Missstände. Straighter Hardcore aus dem Ruhrpott. Hardcore mit mehr als nur einer offensichtlichen Message. Die Rede ist von CITY TO CITY (GER).


Erst einmal vielen Dank an Nico von CITY TO CITY für dieses Interview!

Bitte gib uns doch einen kurzen Einblick in die bisherige (Entstehungs-)Geschichte von CITY TO CITY. Wie und wann kam es zur Gründung der Band, was sind eure (musikalischen) Einflüsse?

Gründung: Anfang 2008. Unser Umfeld, sämtliche Ruhrpott-Bands und natürlich die Wurzeln aus Übersee.


CITY TO CITY - was steckt hinter dem Namen? Auf dem ersten Blick könnte man vermuten, dass es sich darauf bezieht, dass ihr von Stadt zu Stadt zieht, um eure Botschaft zu überbringen…

In guter alter HC Tradition nach einem Song-Namen einer Band aus den 80`zigern benannt; wir fanden, dass es perfekt ins Ruhrgebiet passt, da wir uns innerhalb von Minuten zwischen den Städten hin und her bewegen. Aber in Richtung mit der Botschaft wird es wohl auch noch einen Song Text gehen.


Viele Bands bringen als Debut eine CD-R-Demo auf den Markt, euer erstes Release war direkt eine 5-Track-EP im Jewel Case, ordentlichem Booklet und Artwork. War das so geplant oder kam die Idee dazu spontan?

Hat sich so ergeben, weil wir dann so ne einigermaßen ordentliche Produktion hinbekommen haben, wir auch aus verschiedenen Gründen nicht wussten wie es genau mit der Band weitergehen sollte und so das Material zu schade fanden um es nicht auf ne CD zu packen.


Die Fotos im Booklet zeigen einige s/w-Impressionen des Ruhrgebietes. Welche Städte / Orte sind dort abgebildet?

Nur unsere Stadt Bochum. Aber natürlich passt es in fast jede Stadt im Ruhrgebiet und natürlich repräsentieren wir auch den gesamten Ruhrpott.


Daniel und ich sind ebenfalls waschechte Pott`ler. Was verbindet ihr mit dem Ruhrgebiet bzw. was bedeutet euch dieses schöne Fleckchen Erde?

Hassliebe! Man wächst hier auf, manchmal liebst du es und oft hasst man es auch. Kommst hier aber irgendwie auch nicht raus. Denkst oft daran wie du hier weg kommst, werden es aber wohl auch nie wirklich schaffen oder durchziehen, weil sich alles, was dir irgendwie etwas bedeutet natürlich hier befindet. Also geboren, aufgewachsen und werden hier wohl auch irgendwann die Augen zu machen.


Außerdem ziert eine S-Bahn die CD. Wir denken, dass es die gute, alte S 1 ist, die quer durch das Ruhrgebiet fährt. Habt ihr Jungs auch mit Verspätungen, Umleitungen und „Verzögerungen im Betriebsablauf“ zu kämpfen?

Ja, ist die S 1. Genau diese Bahn ist ca. 3 Wochen durch den ganzen Pott gefahren. Und ja sicher, natürlich kennt das jeder hier, genauso wie den Ruhrschleichweg, müssen ja jeden Tag hier durch den ganzen Stress. Sind irgendwie zu viele Menschen auf einem Haufen, haha.


Euer zweites Release – Enslavement – ist eine weitere EP im Pappschuber (plus DIN A 4 – Beilage) mit drei neuen Songs und einem „Remix“ von „Money is your God“. Dieser Silberling kam im Herbst 2010 raus. Einige Worte dazu?

Werden diesen Sound weiterführen. Checkt die EP aus, unterstützt euren lokalen Untergrund und nicht nur das 1000 Ami – Tourpacket in irgendwelchen großen anonymen Hallen.


Auf eurem ersten Release gab Ben (ZERO MENTALITY) seine Stimme zum Track „Concrete“ und auf eurer zweiten Veröffentlichung gibt`s Guest-Vocals von Marcel (THE PLATOON). Wie kam es zu den Features?

Fink kenne ich seit Ewigkeiten, gehört halt immer noch zum engeren Kreis. Für die Jüngeren, wenn ihr wissen wollt was der Junge so gemacht hat, besorgt euch das erste ZM Album “In Fear Of Forever“, ein echter Klassiker. Und Marcel kannten wir noch von Drift, einer der besten Frontmänner Deutschlands, wahrscheinlich der Beste. Einer der besten aus Europa und kann auch locker mit Ami-Größen mithalten. Ist halt Pottszene und Umgebung, irgendwann kennt man sich, man sieht sich ja andauernd irgendwo auf Shows.


Mit wem würdet ihr in Zukunft gerne mal einen Song einspielen?

Eigentlich nur mit Freunden und Bekannten, Björn (BLACK FRIDAY`29), Ricardo (FOR THE GLORY) und Samis (REDUCTION) alle auf einem Track, hahaha.


Des Weiteren gibt es seit Sommer 2010 die auf 500 Exemplare limitierte 4-Way-Split 7“ mit LAST MILE aus Dänemark, FOR THE GLORY aus Portugal, BLACK FRIDAY `29 und euch aus Deutschland. Wie kam es zu dieser europäischen Split und ist diese noch erhältlich?

Ja, gibt’s seit Sommer und es gibt wohl noch nen paar bei einigen Distros/Labels. War ne Idee von Ricardo (FOR THE GLORY), kenne den besten Typ seit vielen Jahren. Die Split war fast fertig, wir hatten gerade aufgenommen, haben die Jungs gefragt, alle hatten Bock drauf und hat dann noch geklappt. MP3`s sind beschissen, kauft CD`s und Vinyl. Back To The Old School!


Sind all eure bisherigen Releases DIY? Wie wichtig ist euch diese Einstellung bzw. Vorgehensweise?

Ja zu 100%. Ist neben der Musik und den Texten die 3 Säule und hatten sowieso fast keine andere Wahl. Ein paar Freunde unterstützen uns und sonst machen wir alles alleine.


Was hat es mit „I HATE MONEY RECORDS“ auf sich?

Neues Ruhrpott Label.


Wie im Einleitungstext schon geschrieben, nutzt ihr die Musik, die ihr macht, als „Waffe“. Die u. a. „Anti-Government-Attitude“ kommt in den Texten („…this system with all its false promises… vom Track „Enslavement“) ja mehr als deutlich zu Tage. Spiegeln all eure Textinhalte persönliche (negativen) Erfahrungen mit der Gesellschaft, dem System etc. wieder?

Fast alle. Ey, ganz ehrlich, ich hasse dieses System. Es bringt ganz wenigen Glück und es bringt Millionen Menschen jeden Tag Leid und Verzweiflung. Diejenigen die noch ihre Jobs haben und noch in der Matrix gefangen sind, werden das natürlich anders sehen, aber wir repräsentieren ja auch die kritische Minderheit bzw. alle die gerade ihre Jobs verlieren, die sich für nen verkackten Lohn den Arsch aufreißen und alle die, die sich jeden Tag fragen wie man über die Runden kommt und wohin die ganze Scheiße führen soll. Wer sich wirklich Informationen besorgt wie diese Gesellschaft überhaupt aufgebaut ist, wird merken das wir uns jeden Tag mit einem absoluten Dreckssystem, einer Mischung aus George Orwells “1984“ und Aldous Huxleys “Schöner Neuen Welt“ konfrontiert sehen. Uns wird jeden Tag systematisch die Menschlichkeit aberzogen. Die Medien ballern uns mit 99% Scheiße zu, die fast nur aus Public Relations / Propaganda (Public Relations ist ja nur ein anderes Wort für Propaganda) bestehen. Dann muss man in Zeiten von Massenarbeitslosigkeit und Millionen von Billiglohnsklaven auch noch gucken wo man bleibt. Wir sind alle völlig versklavt an ein System was nichts mehr mit menschlichem Leben zu tun hat. Es könnte alles so anders sein, aber die dunkle herrschende Klasse hat uns alle versklavt und blind gemacht.


Darüber hinaus lasst ihr euch deutlich gegen Profit- und Habgier aus („...when humans fall in love with money instead of humans…“ vom Song „Facade“). Wie versucht ihr in eurem Leben dagegen anzugehen bzw. damit umzugehen? Immerhin braucht man ja Geld für`s „Überleben“, oder?

Der Text ist über Menschen, die Geld und Gesellschaftlichen Status bzw. Gesellschaftliche Akzeptanz über echte Menschliche Gefühle stellen. Geld ist das lächerlichste Tauschmittel was der Mensch jemals geschaffen hat. Wer das nicht begreift ist leider nur ein einfacher Systemsklave. Natürlich braucht man in dieser Welt etwas zum Überleben. Man braucht es leider, aber es ist nicht wichtig.


Im Track „Money is your God“ geht ihr darauf erneut ein und sprecht zudem eine Angst an, die wahrscheinlich viele kennen: Durch die immer und immer wiederkehrende Routine im Job-Alltag zu verstumpfen. Oder auch Leute, die durch Beruf und Geld Familie, Freunde und Freizeit vernachlässigen und wohl auch bald gänzlich verlieren („…Day in, day out you`re living a lie. It`s gonna be all the same until you die… / … married to money, your job and the car…“). Gibt es dort bereits persönliche Erfahrungen und wie geht ihr mit der Sache im Generellen um?

Geld ist dein Gott, der Titel trifft ja schon eine Aussage. Eigentlich ist der Text ein klassischer Punk-Text, gegen Leute, die nur für ihren Job, Karriere und ihr Auto leben und so weiter. Außerdem geht es um Leute die für beruflichen Erfolg sich jeden Tag selbst belügen. Wir alle machen das bis zu einem gewissen Grad und spielen öfters irgendwelche Rollen, z.B. auf der Arbeit etc. und jeder kann den Text auch auf sich bezogen auslegen. Ja, der graue Alltag, ich denke jeder kennt das in der einen oder anderen Form. Je älter du wirst, umso kleiner wird dein soziales Umfeld. Wo du noch vor wenigen Jahren mit tausend Leuten zu tun hattest, stehst du da und fragst dich wo auf einmal alle hin sind. Die Arbeit und tausend andere gesellschaftliche bzw. andere äußere Umstände machen es immer schwieriger Freundschaften / Beziehungen zu führen. Man sollte aber trotz der ganzen Scheiße versuchen sein Leben zu leben, auch wenn’s oft sehr schwer ist. Gegen Familie richtet sich der Text überhaupt nicht, Familie ist neben den Freunden das wichtigste im Leben.


Wie wichtig ist es euch im Allgemeinen, eine Message durch die Musik an den Mann zu bringen? Bringt ihr das live auf der Bühne durch Ansagen ebenfalls rüber?

Sehr wichtig. Das ist ja mit das einzige was eine Hardcore Band ausmacht. Natürlich versucht man das auch live.


Es gibt mittlerweile einige Bands, die lediglich auf fette Moshparts und übelste Breakdowns abzielen. „Auf-die-Fresse-Texte“ statt einer Botschaft. Was haltet ihr davon?

Wenn man die Botschaft oder Message aus der Musik rauszieht, bleibt eigentlich nichts mehr übrig. Dann ist es halt nur noch eine seltsame Sportveranstaltung bei der komische Musik läuft oder so ähnlich. Also kann man davon nichts halten, weil die Musik ist ja nicht umsonst so aggressiv, wenn man aber den Grund der Härte der Musik, also gesellschaftliche Missstände soziale Probleme etc. also die Aussage die alle alten Bands verbunden haben, wie z.B. Gesellschaftskritik, Texte gegen Krieg, Probleme der Unterschicht etc. ignoriert, ist es irgendwie sinnlos. Eine echte Message und Aussage hatten alle echten Untergrundbands und dabei ist es egal ob es Hardcore, Punk, Metal, Rap oder sonst eine Musikrichtung war.

Und glaubt ihr, dass Leute in sich kehren und sich die richtigen Fragen stellen?

Nein. Die simpelsten Fragen über unser komisches angeblich zivilisiertes Leben bleiben fast immer außen vor und es wird nicht darüber nachgedacht. Diese Fragen sind aber elementar. Wer beginnt Kriege? Wie ist die Gesellschaft aufgebaut? Wie ist es möglich, dass alle Länder, einschließlich Deutschland verschuldet sind? Und bei wem sind sie überhaupt verschuldet und was bedeutet das für unsere Zukunft? Warum führt Deutschland wieder Krieg? Wieso ist der Teuro seit seiner Einführung fast nichts mehr wert? Wer hat die Macht in diesem Land? Die Politiker bestimmt nicht, weil es ja völlig egal ist, welche Partei grad wieder oben ist, es geht ja trotzdem immer nur in eine Richtung, sprich es wird immer schlimmer. Wer zieht aber dann die Fäden im Hintergrund? Wer installiert hier die Amerikanischen Verhältnisse? Was geschah wirklich am 11. September 2001? Und wer formt die Meinung der Massen? Um nur mal ein paar Fragen zu nennen die vielleicht interessant sein könnten.


Wo kann man euch denn demnächst live sehen und was gibt es sonst noch für Neuigkeiten von und über CITY TO CITY?

Ist erst mal grad nichts weiter geplant, außer neue Songs zu schreiben für unsere erste LP. Wird aber wohl auch noch ne Weile dauern. 2011 wird man aber sicher noch das ein oder andere von CTC hören.

Welchen „Prominenten / Politiker / Star“ würdet ihr gern mal die Meinung sagen? Und vor allem: was?

Also Plasberg, Jauch, Kerner, Illner und Co., mit ihren pseudokritischen Fernsehformaten sind nur Lobbyisten die im Grunde genommen die neoliberale Politik verbreiten, also amerikanische Verhältnisse hier mit installieren und die Leute sind auch noch so bescheuert das sie die Kacke, die ihnen vorgesetzt wird, auch noch nachplappern weil sie das ganze leider nicht verstehen. Politiker sind nur schlechte Schauspieler, die diesem System dienen. Unter ihnen gibt’s dumme Marionetten, aber auch sehr gefährliche kriminelle Schwerverbrecher, die genau wissen was sie tun. Wie zum Beispiel der Kriegsminister Guttenberg, er ist ein wirklich sehr gefährlicher blaublütiger Oligarch, der genau weiß was er da macht. Seine Familie ist ein Adelsgeschlecht, die seit Jahrhunderten schon ihr Unwesen treiben. Der hat die wichtigen Kontakte zu den amerikanischen Strippenziehern, er ist ein Repräsentant der Neuen Weltordnung. Die Medien stilisieren in hoch zum politischen Superstar, ähnlich wie bei Obama, dann geht es nur noch darum was er trägt oder was seine Frau anhat und keiner fragt mehr nach, was er wirklich macht bzw. welche Politik er umsetzt. Das sind wirklich sehr gefährliche Entwicklungen. Die meisten Stars sind doch nur arme Gestalten. Natürlich erfüllen sie auch ihren Zweck, aber sobald sie nicht mehr mitspielen werden sie doch einfach ausgetauscht und einfach gegen jemand anders ersetzt. Also prinzipiell sind fast alle Personen, die regelmäßig in den Massenmedien auftauchen böse Marionetten die einem unmenschlichen System dienen, egal, wie nett sie in die Kamera lächeln können, gibt natürlich harmlosere und richtig böse, aber ich meine halt die immer wieder auftauchenden bösen Babylon - Clowns.
